This educational facility for IVY Tech Community College on the Smith Field airport site is owned by the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority. The building was designed for its principle utilization – technical education. This $1.4 million project includes a 5,000 sq. ft. aviation hangar (along with an 80 ft. by 20 ft. bi-fold hangar door) and a 5,000 sq. ft. educational suite consisting of classrooms, offices, study areas, computer library, technology room, lounge, restrooms, storage and a coffee bar. A mezzanine was provided above the educational suite to allow for storage of aircraft parts used in the educational curriculum. A hoist system was provided to allow access between the hangar floor and the mezzanine. This project was fast tracked and went from concept to operation within 11 months, and won a local BCA award for Excellence in Construction in 2008.
